Worst storm in the Philippines; hits to death 98 people

Web Desk (LTN NEWS): The national disaster agency said Monday that 98 people have died because of a storm that hit the Philippines. There is not much hope of finding survivors in the worst-hit areas.

About half of the deaths were caused by Tropical Storm Nalgae’s flash floods and landslides, which destroyed villages on the southern island of Mindanao Friday.

Mindanao does not get hit by many of the 20 or so typhoons that hit the Philippines yearly, but when they do, they tend to be more deadly than in Luzon and the country’s center.

“We switched from a search-and-rescue operation to a retrieval operation because the chances of survival after two days are almost zero,” said Naguib Sinarimbo, who is in charge of civil defense in the Bangsamoro region of Mindanao.

The national disaster agency said 63 people were still missing in its most recent report. This number is likely to go up.

Several people were hurt

As rescuers looked for more bodies in the mud and wreckage, survivors cleaned up their flooded homes, which was an unfortunate job.

Residents of Noveleta municipality, south of Manila capital, cleaned muddy water out of their homes and shops while their furniture and belongings dried in the sun on the streets.

Joselito Ilano, 55, whose house was flooded up to his waist, said, “I’ve lived here my whole life, and this is the first time we’ve seen flooding like this.”

“This is the worst flooding I’ve ever seen. I was caught off guard.”

As Nalgae moved across the country, it flooded towns, destroyed crops, and cut off power in many places.

It happened on a long weekend before All Saints’ Day, on Tuesday, when millions of Filipinos travel to visit the graves of loved ones.

Scientists have warned that the world is getting warmer, making storms more potent and more likely to kill and damage things.

As Nalgae moved across the South China Sea, a state weather forecaster warned that another tropical depression was heading toward the Philippines.

The new weather system could bring more heavy rain and misery to places where Nalgae is causing much trouble.

In recent years, storms in the Philippines have caused the most deaths from landslides and flash floods that start on mostly deforested mountainsides.

In April, another tropical storm caused flooding and landslides that killed people in the central province of Leyte. The flooding and landslides destroyed farming and fishing communities.
