Web Desk (LTN NEWS): United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is “outraged” about a “serious incident” that happened on Sunday when members of the UN Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) shot and killed two people and hurt 14 others in the town of Kalindi on the border with Uganda, according to his deputy spokesman.

In a statement released Sunday night, the deputy spokesman, Farhan Aziz Haq, said, “The Secretary-General is both saddened and shocked by the loss of life and serious injuries.”

People in the troubled eastern Congo and the UN peacekeeping force have been fighting a lot more in the past week. Nearly 20 people have been killed in protests calling for the force to leave the area because they say it hasn’t kept them safe from armed groups.

Guterres also sent his deepest condolences to the families of the victims, the people of the country, and the Congolese government. He also wished those who have been hurt a quick recovery.

Bintou Keita, who is the Special Representative and Head of MONUSCO, said in a statement that MONUSCO soldiers from the Intervention Brigade,

The soldiers, who had been home on leave, opened fire at the border post for “unknown reasons.”

“This terrible thing has killed people and hurt a lot of people,” she said.

Ms. Keita said she was “deeply shocked and saddened” by what happened. She also sent her deepest condolences to the families of the victims and wished the injured a quick recovery.

In the meantime, the Secretary-General made it clear that “people must be held accountable for these events.”

The UN has gotten in touch with the peacekeepers’ home country in order to “urgently start legal proceedings with the participation of victims and witnesses so that the right punishments can be given.”

The head of MONUSCO said that the soldiers’ actions were “unspeakable and irresponsible.” He also said that those responsible had been found and were being held until the results of an investigation that had already begun with the Congolese government.

The Secretary-General was happy with her decision to hold the MONUSCO peacekeepers responsible and start an investigation right away.
