Web Desk (LTN NEWS): The British author Salman Rushdie was attacked on stage in western New York State on Friday. Because of his blasphemous books, he has been threatened with death and forced to live in hiding. Rushdie’s health wasn’t known right away after the attack.
People rushed to help him after he was attacked at the Chautauqua County event, which was caught on video and shared on social media. The police confirmed that he had been stabbed, but they didn’t say who the victim was right away.
The Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office said, “We can confirm that there was a stabbing,” but they didn’t say anything else.
The author, who is now 75, came into the public eye when his second book, “Midnight’s Children,” was published in 1981. It was praised around the world and won the prestigious Booker Prize in Britain for its portrayal of India after it became independent.
His controversial book “The Satanic Verses,” which came out in 1988, caused a religious decree called a “fatwa,” which led to death threats. Muslims thought that the book was disrespectful to the Prophet Mohammed (PBUH).
A decade in hiding
After his translators and publishers were killed or tried to be killed, the British government gave him police protection in Britain, where he went to school and lived. He was on the run for almost ten years.
Rushdie didn’t start to come out of his life on the run until the late 1990s after Iran said in 1998 that it wouldn’t help kill him.
Rushdie still gets threats and boycotts when he goes to literary events. His knighthood in 2007 caused protests in Iran and Pakistan.
