Prince Charles, not Queen Elizabeth of the United Kingdom, attended the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony, which was place in Birmingham. As he read out the Queen’s message to the Commonwealth countries, the Prince declared the games to be open.

Malala underlined the need for girls’ education throughout her remarks and said it was an honor to be present.

She stated, “It is a privilege to be here for the opening ceremony and I welcome everyone to Birmingham.”

“Every child ought to have the opportunity to realize their full potential and chase their wildest goals,” she said, adding that the young athletes competing in the Games serve as a reminder of this.
