Web Desk (LTN NEWS): Shahbaz Gill, the leader of the PTI who is in jail, is ready to say sorry to clear up the misunderstanding in the sedition case against him, his lawyer told the court today.
On Monday, a district and sessions court in Islamabad went back to hearing a petition for Shahbaz Gill’s interim bail in the sedition case.
Gill was picked up at Banigala Chowk in the capital on August 9, a day after he said some controversial things on a private TV channel. After that, he was charged with sedition and trying to get people in state institutions to work against the Pakistan Army.
Extra Sessions and Districts the sedition case is being heard by Judge Zafar Iqbal. The lawyers for Shahbaz Gill are making their points in court.
At the start of today’s hearing, Inspector Rashid and the records of the sedition case against Gill were brought before the court.
Gill’s lawyer, Burhan Moazzam, asked the court for a copy of the record and any proof or testimony against his client.
At this point, the judge told the police to give Gill’s lawyer the record.
The police let Gill’s lawyer see the record, but the prosecutor, Raja Rizwan Abbasi, asked the court to stop the lawyers from taking photos of the papers.
The prosecutor said, “We will share records with the suspect’s lawyers, but we can’t show them anything else.”
The judge agreed with his plea and told the police to give Gill’s lawyer access to the records. The hearing was put on hold until 11 a.m. today.
Court gave the police their last chance to turn in records
At the last hearing, the Islamabad court told the police in the capital that they had until Monday to hand over all the records related to the sedition case against the PTI leader. His lawyers said that the delay was “unfortunate.”
During the hearing that day, the police told the court that they couldn’t reach the investigation officer, who was in Karachi and had the records, and that his phone had been turned off.
Rizwan Abbas, the special prosecutor, told the court that he needed to see the records before he could make his case.
At this point, Gill’s lawyers said it was “very bad” that the police were dragging out the case.
In response, Additional District and Sessions Judge Tahir Mahmood Supra said that he was giving the police one “last chance” to give him the records by Monday.
The case hearing was then put off until Monday (today).
Multiple charges
Gill is being charged with serious crimes after he allegedly called for a military revolt on a private TV channel earlier this month.
He was already being charged with sedition, but the Islamabad police had also put him in jail for having an illegal weapon.
He was charged in the case after weapons, a satellite phone, and foreign currency was found in the jailed PTI leader’s room in Parliament Lodges last week.
Since Gill was arrested, the PTI has said over and over that he was tortured, humiliated, and sexually assaulted while in police custody. The police and the government have denied all of these claims.
Gill also told reporters that he had been “sexually assaulted” during the raid at his home in Parliament Lodge.
Human Rights Watch (HRW) has asked for a quick, independent, and open investigation into the claims that Gill was tortured by police while in custody.
At the moment, the PTI leader is on judicial remand in the two cases, which will end on September 7.
