Web Desk (LTN NEWS): Faisal Shahkar has been chosen by UN Secretary-General António Guterres to be a police adviser in the department of peace operations.
Faisal Shahkar, a top police officer in Pakistan, has been named a police adviser in the UN Police Department of Peace Operations (DPO), a UN spokesman said Monday.
Shahkar takes over for Luis Carrilho of Portugal, whose mission just ended.
Stephane Dujarric, the UN’s spokesman, said at the noon briefing that UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres chose Shahkar for the job because he has more than 30 years of experience at home and abroad.
He is an inspector-general in Pakistan at the moment. He has also held high-level jobs with the Pakistan Police, such as the Additional Inspector General in Punjab (2015 to 2018) and Regional Police Chief (from 2014-15).
IGP Shahkar has worked for the UN for more than nine years at Headquarters and on the ground. He was the team leader for the UN Standing Police Capacity (2020-2021).
He also worked for the Department of Peace Operations’ Police Division, which supported field operations, the United Nations Mission in Liberia, and the United Nations Mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Shahkar has a master’s in law from the University of London in the United Kingdom. He also has a master’s degree from the University of Punjab in political science. He speaks both English and Urdu well.
