Web Desk (LTN NEWS): Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader and former information minister Fawad Chaudhry was the second party leader to express concern on Wednesday about the relationship between his party and the army, saying that the “differences” could have “devastating effects” for the country.
Shahbaz Gill, the leader of the party, was arrested yesterday and brought before a district and sessions court in Islamabad. Shortly before Fawad’s tweet, the judge gave police permission to keep him in custody for two days.
According to the government, Gill was arrested because he was accused of sedition and trying to get people to work against state institutions.
Fawad Chaudhry said, “Differences between the country’s largest political party and the institution in charge of national security are terrible for the country.”
In the tweet, he said, “We are doing our best to clear up the misunderstandings.” He also asked the other political parties not to “go too far against each other.”
“Recent events in the country have hurt democracy and broken people’s rights,” said the former minister.
Asad Umar, the secretary general of the PTI and a former minister of planning said earlier today that the PTI opposition was making up a story to drive a wedge between the party and the army.
Asad Umar said at a press conference in Lahore that a case had been made against the PTI to make the party look like a “threat.”
He had said that the PTI leader Shahbaz Gill was taken by “force” and that his arrest was “illegal” because it “misinterpreted the law.”
‘Hurtful comments ‘
Earlier, the army had strongly criticized what it called “hurtful and derogatory” comments made by a certain group of people after the helicopter crash that killed six army officers, including Quetta Corps Commander Lt. General Sarfraz Ali.
When people heard that the army helicopter had gone missing, some of them said mean things about it on social media. Some of them went as far as to say they hoped that top military leaders were on the missing helicopter.
Most of the people who said this seemed to be from a certain political party that thought the country’s security establishment had done them wrong.
The military’s media arm had strong objections to the campaign on social media, but they didn’t say which party they were against.
