Web Desk (LTN NEWS): Indian police arrested a state lawmaker from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s party on Tuesday on suspicion of “promoting hatred in the name of religion.” Muslim groups had asked for his arrest because of what he said about the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

T. Raja Singh is a lawmaker from the southern state of Telangana. He was arrested a few months after Nupur Sharma, a spokesperson for his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), was fired for making comments that led to a diplomatic backlash against India.

Joel Davis, a top police officer in Hyderabad city, told Reuters, “He has been charged with promoting hatred in the name of religion.”

“We have him in custody, and we will put him in jail. This is about the video he just put up.”

In the video, which was shared on social media, Singh made controversial comments that seemed to be about the Prophet.

K. Krishna Rao, a spokesman for the Hindu nationalist BJP, told the News18 channel that the party would look into Singh’s comments and take action if he was found to have broken its rules.

After the video was shared on social media, footage from the news showed that hundreds of Muslims protested against Singh on Monday night.
