Web Desk (LTN NEWS): Arshad Sharif, a well-known journalist and news anchor, was shot and killed in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya. At first, it said that Sharif had died in an accident, but later, his wife, Javeria Siddique, confirmed that the journalist had been killed by gunfire in Kenya.
Javeria Siddique wrote on Twitter that Kenyan police told her that Sharif was shot and killed in Nairobi and that an investigation is still ongoing.
Arshad Sharif’s wife also asked people not to post pictures of their families, personal information, or Sharif’s last hospital pictures on social media.
Arshad Sharif used to work for ARY News, but he quit and moved to Dubai. Before going to Kenya, he was seen a few days ago in London, where he had just come from Dubai.
IHC sends notices to ministries of interior and foreign affairs
Earlier today, a petition was sent to the Islamabad High Court (IHC). The petition asked the court to put together a group to find out what happened to Sharif.
Barrister Shoaib Razzaq, who filed the petition, asked for a commission to be set up to find out why Sharif had left the country. He also asked the court to order the journalist’s body to be returned to Pakistan.
During the hearing, the Chief Justice of the IHC, Athar Minallah, asked the petitioner where the journalist’s body was. The lawyer then told the judge that it happened in Nairobi, Kenya.
After this, the judge sent notices to the interior and foreign affairs secretaries. He also told officials from both ministries to meet with the journalist’s family and give a report by tomorrow.
FM Bilawal in touch with Kenyan authorities
Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari said that the death of the journalist saddened him and that the Pakistani government is talking to Kenyan officials about the situation.
“The unbelievable fact that journalist Arshad Sharif was killed is a huge shock and a huge loss for Pakistan’s journalist community.”
The foreign minister said, “I’m sorry for journalist Arshad Sharif’s death. My condolences go out to his family, to the journalist community, and to his fans.”
‘Case of mistaken identity,’ Kenyan police
The Kenyan newspaper The Star said that Sharif was shot in the head by police in the city because they said he had broken a rule about a roadblock.
“There was a shooting, but it turned out that a journalist had been mistaken for someone else. We will give out more information later,” a police officer told The Star.
According to the article, the police said that the people at the manned roadblock had been told to stop a car like the one Sharif and his driver were in after a carjacking in Nairobi in which a child was allegedly taken, hostage.
The Star said that Sharif was asked to stop and show his ID, but he allegedly drove past the roadblock without stopping. It said this led to a short chase and shooting that killed the journalist.
According to a Kenyan newspaper, Sharif’s driver was hurt and rushed to the hospital. It also said that the driver told the police that he and Sharif were developers going to a building site in Magadi.
The police headquarters said Kenya’s Independent Policing Oversight Authority would look into the case. In the meantime, a senior police officer said that a complete statement would be made public later.
