Rain Death Toll in Several areas of Balochistan, Sindh

ISLAMABAD (LTN News): On Monday, flash floods caused devastation in various areas of Balochistan and Sindh in the third round of monsoon rainfall. 8 people lost their lives. Rain-related incidents claimed the lives of people, and many others who were left stranded after bridges and highways were washed away waited for help.

In Sindh’s Khairpur district, a man and his two young sons died when the roof of their house collapsed during heavy rain in the Gambat area near Ranipur late Monday night. The man’s wife and two daughters were also hurt.

“So far, 32 children and 28 women are among the dead,” said the head of the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), Naseer Ahmed Nasar.

Nasar said that most of the children drowned when heavy rain in different parts of the province caused flash floods. Two people died when a mud-walled house in Wadh tehsil of Khuzdar fell down. Rescue workers and people who lived in the area got to the scene and pulled the bodies out of the rubble, they said.

The DG of the PDMA said, “Floods also washed away parts of the highway between Quetta and Karachi, cutting Balochistan off from Sindh.” He said that hundreds of cars were stuck on the highway and that women, children, and the elderly had to wait for hours.

Mirpurkhas, Larkana, Dadu, Qambar-Shahdadkot, and other nearby towns were also flooded by heavy rains.

Families in Lasbela wait for a rescue team

At least 300 people, including women and children, were waiting for rescue on Tuesday in the Oraki region of Lasbela district. The floods in the area had flooded the villages and washed away the mud houses, forcing people to live outside.

Even though 24 hours had passed, the local government had not been able to help the people who were stuck and were running out of food and clean water when this report was made. Balochistan’s Chief Minister Abdul Quddus Bizenjo was told about the problem, and he told the authorities to help the families who were stuck.

“The bridges at Bela Cross and Hub Chowki have been damaged by floods,” the commissioner’s office said in a statement. The commissioner told the different departments to make sure that bridges and roads that were damaged were fixed as soon as possible.

The flood and rain victims in Balochistan were given more than Rs900 million in compensation from the government. Farah Azeem Shah, a spokesperson for the provincial government, said, “Chief Minister Abdul Quddus Bizenjo ordered that money be given to the heirs of those who died in the recent floods.”

Five people died in Karachi, where parts of the city are still flooded with sewage-tainted rainwater for the third day in a row. Also, Karachi was declared to be in a weather emergency on Monday because the monsoon rains are coming down harder than usual and flooding homes and making streets impassable.

At least seven people died when power lines fell into flooded streets and shocked them. This is a common way for people to die in the city during the monsoon.

After floods destroyed the Hub River bridge, the Lasbela Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) asked the government to build a new one. It also asked the power companies to get the power back on in Hub, which had been cut off because of flooding that destroyed pylons in the area.

The chamber asked the National Highway Authority (NHA) to build a “new bridge on war footings.” The Balochistan government was told by the chamber that traffic was being sent to the Hub Bypass because of the current situation. It said that the bypass and its bridge are not wide enough and asked for immediate steps to make them wider.

It also said that the Sakran Road, an alternative route from Karachi to Hub that needs to be fixed before a new bridge can be built on N-25, must be open to traffic
