Web Desk (LTN NEWS): Even though there had been a lot of worries, the river Ravi was flowing at 29,000 cusecs and looked normal on Wednesday.
Officials from the Flood Forecasting Division say that India let out 171,000 cusecs of water in two days, but the dry bed helped Pakistan, so only 29,000 cusecs of water made it to Shahdara on Wednesday.
The dry bed, which has been dry for decades, is kept dry by three natural things. “The flow slows down, a lot of water is lost to quench the thirst of the riverbed, and the flow lasts longer. Because of this, the flow of the river Ravi at Shahdara is totally normal. To give you an idea of how much water is flowing, the bridge on the Ravi at Shahdara is made of 235,000 cusecs, but only 29,000 cusecs are flowing on Wednesday.
“The department measured 63,000 cusecs at Kot Naina, where it enters the country, and by the time it got to Shahdara, 160 kilometers later, more than half of that had been lost,” it said.
“The current panic isn’t about the river overflowing and getting into some towns. Instead, it’s about saving the people who live along the riverbanks. The riverbed is now home to living structures and even factories, and the district government is in a panic to save them, even though it’s not clear how they got there in the first place. The only way to deal with the situation is to get these people out of there. Building more buildings to save them won’t help. That’s what needs to be done.”
The Provincial Disaster Management Authority said that its head and staff went to the parts of Dera Ghazi Khan that were flooded. At this time, the Relief Commissioner for Punjab said that there were enough funds for the flood victims to get help and get back on their feet. All the organizations were working day and night to help. This year, the river and mountains broke their previous flood records, and he said that two more days of rain were expected.
He said that flood relief camps had been set up in the areas that had been hit.
