More than 1600 Pakistanis lost their lives: PM Shehbaz

Web Desk (LTN NEWS): PM Shehbaz Sharif said on Wednesday that other countries could also be hit by climate-related disasters. This came after flash floods in Pakistan flooded a third of the country, killing thousands and forcing millions to move.

“What happened in Pakistan will not stay in Pakistan,” he said in a tweet, repeating his call for immediate action a day after the UN issued a revised flash appeal for $816 million to help flood-stricken Pakistanis.

PM Shehbaz said that massive floods had killed more than 1,600 Pakistanis, including 400 children, and that thousands of kilometres of roads and bridges had been destroyed.

“The raging waters have swept away whole villages. Nature has been really cruel,” he said.

A video compilation posted by the government’s official Twitter account showed different times when Shehbaz made passionate calls to the world, urging the world to help disaster-stricken Pakistan right away.

UN changes its request by five times.

After the UN changed its humanitarian appeal for Pakistan by a factor of five, PM Shehbaz took to Twitter to thank UN chief Antonio Guterres for “articulating” the needs of flood victims.

“The UN’s revised request for $816 million to help flood victims shows how important it is to keep the whole world involved,” he wrote, adding that as the health and food crises get worse, there is an urgent need to “step up” action.

On Tuesday, Pakistan and the UN put out a new flash appeal for $816 million to help people who have been hurt by floods caused by climate change that has never happened before.

In Geneva, UN member states and humanitarian groups were told about the updated 2022 Pakistan Floods Response Plan.

The new urgent appeal asks for $816 million to meet the growing needs of the people to save their lives. This is a $656 million increase from the first appeal, which asked for $160 million.
