Documentary on the Sharif family not made by Netflix

Web Desk (LTN NEWS): Some misleading posts that hundreds of thousands have seen say that a documentary about Pakistan’s prime minister’s alleged corruption is an “upcoming Netflix series.”

However, a producer for the film said that it was made independently. A Netflix representative also noted that the company had nothing to do with making the show.

The video was posted on Twitter on October 17, 2022, and more than 300,000 people have seen it. Comments on that post and others like it show that many people thought Netflix made the documentary.

“Dirty money is a Netflix show. Put away in London… When the doors were shut. Coming Soon…!!! “The tweet is read.

In the minute-and-a-half-long video called “Behind Closed Doors,” Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and his sons are said to be doing illegal business with money. The Sharif family, including Nawaz Sharif, the brother of the current prime minister who has been prime minister three times, has been accused of corruption and laundering money many times. The family says the accusations are false and are based on politics.

Sharif took office on April 11 after a vote of no confidence in his predecessor, Imran Khan, passed by the parliament.

Since then, Khan, the leader of the opposition Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, has led a political campaign against the ruling coalition. He has held rallies nationwide to bring down the government and force early elections.

The misleading video has been seen more than 72,000 times on Facebook, TikTok, and YouTube, where similar claims have also been shared. PTI leaders Taimur Khan Jhagra, Momina Basit, and Faisal Amin Khan posted a video with an equal claim on Twitter, where it was seen more than 28,000 times.

During Khan’s time in office, Shireen Mazari was the country’s minister for human rights. She retweeted the trailer with a similar claim, which was then shared more than 2,400 times.

People on social media seemed to think that Netflix was making the documentary.

Production by itself

The same video was posted on YouTube on October 17, 2022, by an Independent POV channel. Independent POV is an independent production company that makes documentaries about secrets, financial crimes, and the misuse of power.

Part of the video’s description says, “Behind Closed Doors is a movie about corruption in high places and the people who let it happen.”

Michael Oswald, who made the movie, said it has nothing to do with Netflix. “Like all of Independent POV’s other documentaries up to this point, it was made and paid for on its own,” he said.

The website for the documentary has a link to a page where people can donate money to help make it.
