Web Desk (LTN NEWS): Imran Khan went to the Supreme Court to ask that the government not release, share, broadcast, or spread any surveillance data about the country’s top political figures, including the prime minister.
The Prime Minister’s Office has also asked the IT ministry to put together a high-level committee of experts to study “cyber threats and challenges” to state institutions, the Presidency said in a statement on Thursday.
In a letter to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, President Arif Alvi stressed the need to form such a committee, which would then send its recommendations to the premier’s office “to move the matter forward.”
The president wrote to the prime minister a few days after several audio clips of PM Sharif and his predecessor, Imran Khan, talking about work with their ministers or close aides went viral on social media. People say the conversations were recorded in the PM’s office and at his official home.

At the president’s request, the PM office tells the IT ministry to set up a group to deal with cyber threats.
In addition to the letter to the prime minister, the president also sent a report to the relevant institutions. The report’s purpose was to provide a basis for developing a “coherent cyber power strategy in a holistic way” and to develop the “necessary human resources to ensure a brighter future for the country.”
In a petition to the Supreme Court, filed by Uzair Karamat Bhandari on behalf of the PTI leader, he asked for the creation of a Joint Investigation Team (JIT) or a commission to look into the recent audio leaks.
The petition asked the court to tell the government to find and punish the people who approved and carried out the surveillance and then let the information, including audio leaks, get out.
The federal government, the Intelligence Bureau, the Federal Investigation Agency, the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority, and the inspector general of police in Islamabad were all named as respondents by the petitioner.
The head of the PTI said that audio leaks were being put on social media sites and shared without being checked or confirmed. Many of these leaks have been made up or changed by cutting, cannibalising, or putting together different parts of conversations to send the wrong message.
The petitioner said that the “real audios” and their transcripts could be given to the court on a USB drive.
The petition said it was sad that the government seemed “more interested in getting political mileage” from these kinds of releases instead of considering how important the matter was.
“The audio leaks are a serious threat to national security and bring up important legal questions.”
Prime Minister Sharif has already set up two separate investigation teams and a parliamentary oversight body to investigate how information and conversations from the Prime Minister’s House got out. He also asked for advice on how to stop this from happening again in the future.
