Islamabad (LTN NEWS): Just a few days after Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, in his capacity as party chief, penned a letter urging PML-Q lawmakers in Punjab not to vote for his cousin Parvez Elahi in the recent chief minister’s election, the PML-Q central working committee decided on Thursday to remove Shujaat and federal minister Tariq Bashir Cheema from their party positions. The decision was reached unanimously by the committee.
The committee alleged that the PML-Q chief’s poor health rendered him unable to make “prudent” judgments regarding the party and that the latter was conspiring against the party while also exploiting it to further his own personal interests.
The PML-Q committee meeting that was chaired by Senator Kamil Ali Agha and held under his direction made the decision to hold new elections for senior party positions within the next ten days. It established a five-member election committee and selected Jahangir A. Jhoja, the interim head of the party attorneys’ wing, to serve as the election commissioner. Until the intra-party elections take place, Mr. Jhoja will also be in charge of supervising the party’s organizational and administrative concerns.
After the meeting, Senator Agha addressed the media and stated that all bounds had been violated in an effort to harm the party. He was referring to the letter sent by Chaudhry Shujaat that instructed the party MPAs to vote for Hamza Shehbaz of the PML-N. He questioned whether there was any reason to continue having Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain serve as president of the party and Tariq Bashir Cheema as secretary general. “Is there any basis left for that?” “If the incident with the letter may take place, then so can this one.”
