Rain Killed 549 People in One Month

Web Desk (LTN NEWS): Flash floods caused by unusually heavy monsoon rains killed at least 549 people in Pakistan in the last month. A government agency said that remote communities in the poor southwestern province of Balochistan were among the hardest hit.

In the last 24 hours, 11 people have died in different ways because of the monsoon rains. The number of people who have died because of floods and rains across the country has reached 549, and 628 people have been hurt, though none of them are in serious condition.

In areas that were hit by floods, the government and the army set up aid and relief camps and worked to help move families and give them food and medicine. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said on Friday that in addition to the deaths, the flooding had caused damage to more than 46,200 homes.

During his trip to flood-hit areas, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said, “We’re doing our best to help flood victims in a big way and get them back on their feet.” But the provincial government of Balochistan said it needed more money and asked international groups for help.

“Our losses are huge,” said Abdul Quddus Bizenjo, the Chief Minister of the province.

Every area that was flooded ran out of food, and some were cut off from the rest of the province because more than 700 kilometers of roads were washed away.

Bizenjo said that his province needed “huge help” from the government and from organizations that help people all over the world.

On Friday, the NDMA said that the country got 133 percent more rain than usual during the monsoon season, which is currently going on.

The disaster agency said that Balochistan, which borders Iran and Afghanistan, got 305 percent more rain than the average for the year. During the current season, it has rained 218 percent more than usual in Sindh, more than 101 percent more in Punjab, 26 percent more in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, and 68 percent more in Gilgit-Baltistan, and 9 percent more than usual in Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

A spokesperson for the NDMA said in a statement that the current pattern of unusual monsoon rains has broken the record for the most rain in the season over the past 30 years.

On the orders of the prime minister, Rs1 million relief checks were being given to each flood victim.

The NDMA also gave relief supplies to the State Disaster Management Authority and to the provincial disaster management authorities in Sindh and Balochistan.

Tents, tarps, blankets, and mosquito nets are among the things that are being sent to help.

The NDMA also gave PDMA Balochistan 60,000 liters of drinking water. The mineral water was going to be given out in Quetta, Jhal Magsi, and Jafarabad.

The PDMA Balochistan gave 100 tents to the Harnai administration while humanitarian groups kept sending aid to the areas hit by rain and set up medical camps in the disaster-stricken areas.

The official said that, based on the situation of the river, the water flow in the rest of the rivers was normal, and the water situation in all of the country’s dams was normal.

The NDMA also said that part of the Karakoram Highway was damaged at Achar Nala near Dasu Dam, but the road was fixed so that light traffic could move again.

It also said that all other national highways and motorways were open, while provincial and local roads were still being fixed up.
