Web Desk (LTN NEWS): According to a press release from the EU mission in Islamabad on Tuesday, they are giving Rs76 million to Pakistan to “provide crucial humanitarian assistance to families affected by severe flooding, which has caused havoc in many parts” of the country.
The press release says that the aid will focus on meeting the “urgent needs of those most affected in some of the hardest-hit districts” in Balochistan. These districts include Jhal Magsi and Lasbela.
“The devastating floods have caused a lot of damage in Pakistan, and many people have lost their homes, jobs, and other things,” Taheeni Thammannagoda, who is in charge of EU humanitarian programs in the country, was quoted as saying in a press release.
She said that the money would help “get the most vulnerable people the help they need to get through this hard time.”
The press release also said that the money will help the International Rescue Committee help people who need it very much.
The program will also provide psychological support to vulnerable groups like women, adolescent girls, and children. “This includes the provision of cash transfers to help flood-stricken families to meet their immediate needs, primary healthcare services, with a focus on water-borne and communicable diseases, which are common after a flood, as well as nutrition support,” the press release states.
The EU money is being given out through the Small Scale Response mechanism of the European Commission’s European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO).
The press release said that ECHO’s Small Scale Response fund is a “global mechanism that allows for rapid funding” of up to 500,000 euros for humanitarian aid in countries hit by natural and man-made disasters.
Conference of donors
A day ago, the government made the decision to hold a donors’ conference for the rehabilitation of the country’s flood-affected areas. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had previously ordered the distribution of 100,000 ration packets and 40,000 tents to flood victims, and he had also stated that international organizations should be informed about the devastation brought on by floods as well as the ongoing relief and rehabilitation efforts.
He also asked people who care about helping others to give generously to the PM’s Flood Relief Fund. He also told the institutions in charge to speed up the rescue, relief, and recovery process.
Balochistan Chief Minister Mir Abdul Quddus Bizenjo told the prime minister about the flooding in the province, the damage it caused, and the ongoing relief operation at a separate meeting.
