Web Desk(LTN News): Shahnawaz Amir, the primary suspect in the death of Sarah Inam, had his physical remand in custody extended by a district and sessions court in Islamabad on Thursday for an additional four days.
Shahnawaz was detained last week on suspicion of killing his Canadian wife. The event happened in the farmhouse where the suspect and his mother, Sameena Shah, resided in Shahzad Town.
After his remand period expired during the hearing today, Shahnawaz was brought before Civil Judge Muhammad Amir Aziz. The defendant and the victim’s family were not represented by an attorney in court.
The prosecutor asked the judge to prolong Shahnawaz’s remand for an additional five days as the session got underway.
The detective informed the court, “We need to look into the money that the suspect had been getting [from the deceased] further.”
The judge also inquired as to how long the subject had been detained by the police. The officer said, “He’s been in custody for five days now.
The court then added four further days to Shahnawaz’s remand.
The suspect’s father, veteran journalist and former politician Ayaz Amir requested that the court order the police to hand over his client’s cellphone.
The prosecution added that the cellphone had been sent for a forensic study and that Ayaz had told the investigators that the incident’s photo was on his phone.
However, Ayaz’s attorney argued that the phone was unrelated to the investigation.
Ayaz’s request was denied by the judge after hearing arguments. The judge said, “The phone should be returned once the investigation is finished.”
It is important to note that the senior journalist was cleared of the charge of aiding and abetting in the case by the court on Tuesday.
However, the court had warned the police that he might be detained once more if any evidence was discovered against him, with the court’s approval.
The case
Due to the complaint of Shahzad Town Station House Officer Nawazish Ali Khan, the police have been named as a complainant in the case.
According to the complaint, Sameena called police on September 23 to report that Shahnawaz had killed his wife “with a dumbbell.”
According to Sameena’s statement in the FIR, “My son is present in the house and has buried the body,” with the addition that the police later conducted a raid on the residence.
“He had himself sequestered in his chamber. Shahnawaz’s hands and clothes were covered in blood when they broke in, according to the police complaint.
“He then admitted that he had repeatedly struck his wife during an argument with a dumbbell and then covered her body in the bathtub of the bathroom.”
Shahnawaz further claimed in the FIR that he had “buried” the murder weapon under his bed.
The cops examined the dumbbell and discovered blood and hair on it. The FIR further stated, “We have sent it for forensics.”
The victim’s body had reportedly been transferred to the Polyclinic Hospital for a postmortem examination, according to the complaint.
Shahnawaz must be “sentenced to death” in two to three hearings, according to Sarah’s father’s demand.
