Web Desk (LTN NEWS): Antonio Guterres, the Secretary General of the United Nations, said on Friday that Pakistan didn’t do much to cause climate change, but it was one of the countries that were hurt the most by its effects.

He said this while he and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif were at a briefing at the National Flood Response Coordination Centre (NFRCC).

The head of the UN is in Pakistan on a two-day trip to try to get help from the rest of the world for the country’s terrible floods and to stress how important it is to deal with the climate change crisis.

UN General Secretary’s Speech

Guterres began by thanking everyone who was working hard to help the people affected by this “unprecedented natural disaster.”

“Humans have gone to war with nature, and nature is coming after them. But nature can’t see. It’s not getting back at the people who have done more to hurt the environment, he said.

He pointed out that Pakistan hasn’t done much to cause climate change, but it is one of the countries that is being hurt the most by its effects.

“It seems like nature went after the wrong people. Those who are more to blame for climate change should have to deal with these kinds of problems.”

He said that it is the responsibility of the international community to cut emissions by a lot and help countries that need to invest in resilience and recovery.

“I want to use my voice to help Pakistan and its people. We know how little we can do […] but we are fully committed.”

He then said, “I have always seen a huge sense of unity in Pakistan. I have a lot of respect for this country and its people. I will do what I can to raise awareness in the rest of the world.

At the briefing, PM Shehbaz thanked the UN chief for making the trip and said that his understanding and support were “a great boost.”

“The government of Pakistan, the provincial governments, and everyone else involved […] are all working together to help and save millions of people,” he said.

PM Shehbaz said that work was being done and that people affected by the floods were being moved to safer areas and given food and shelter. “The challenge is way beyond what people can do, but people have to deal with it, and we are.”

He thanked the UN secretary general again for coming to Pakistan and told him that the government would give him first-hand information about what was going on there.

Secretary-General and PM Shehbaz discuss the flood situation

Earlier in the day, the UN secretary general and his group came to the PM House, where the prime minister met them.

PM Shehbaz and the head of the UN met to talk about the situation in the country after the terrible floods.

The two sides focused on working together to provide aid, rescue, and rebuilding on an international level to help the people who were hurt by the floods.

At the meeting were also Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb, and other high-ranking officials.

UN General Secretary comes to Islamabad

Guterres got to the capital early on Friday morning. Soon after the UN Flash Appeal for $160 million to help the people most hurt by the floods caused by what he called a “monsoon on steroids,” the secretary general said he would go to Pakistan to show his support.

He will go back to New York on September 11. On September 13, the 77th session of the UN General Assembly will begin.

Islamabad has been asking rich countries to help Pakistan and other poor countries that are suffering from climate change because of their huge amounts of greenhouse gas emissions that caused global warming. In general, rich countries have been unwilling to pay for the damage caused by climate change.

Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb said in a statement on Friday that Guterres’ visit will also help raise awareness about the dangerous effects of climate change.

A report from Radio Pakistan said that the minister of information said that the rest of the world will have to help poor countries hit by natural disasters like floods.

She also thought it was great that the UN secretary-general started the flash flood appeal to help the people of the country.
