Web Desk (LTN NEWS): Pakistan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, said he wanted climate justice for the people of his country. He said this because Pakistan’s carbon footprint is only 0.8% of the world’s total carbon emissions.
During an event here put on by the Council on Foreign Relations, he talked about the huge floods in Pakistan. He said, “All of a sudden, we are one of the 10 most climate-stressed countries on the planet. Pakistan is in eighth place.”
He said that the flood disaster in Pakistan was apocalyptic, epic, and even biblical in size.
He also said that the rain continued for months until the end of August, and that one-third of Pakistan was flooded because of it.
He said that 33 million people were affected by the floods, and many of them lost their homes. Now, their problems are getting worse because water-borne diseases like malaria are spreading.
“We need help from the international community, like the World Health Organization, to deal with diseases that spread through water.”
Bilawal said that Pakistan had problems with food and economic security and that four million acres of standing crops were destroyed by the flood.
“We worry that it won’t be possible to plant wheat crops in two months.”
Bilawal said, “We were in very tough talks with the IMF, and we just came to an agreement with the financial institution.” He was talking about Pakistan’s economic problems.

Pakistan was hoping for a short period of economic relief, but all of the economic numbers and estimates that were shared with the IMF were also lost in the floods, he said.
He said that the damage from the flood was likely to cost close to $ 30 billion.
The people of Dadu in Sindh, Naseerabad in Balochistan, Dera Ghazi Khan in South Punjab, and Dera Ismail Khan in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa were not to blame for this disaster. Instead, it was caused by the effects of climate change.
He thanked the Secretary General of the United Nations, the UN agencies, and the United States for helping Pakistan after the natural disaster.
“I’m glad that the United Nations, the United States, and others have shown sympathy, solidarity, and support.”
“We want to be able to help the people of Pakistan rebuild their lives and ways of making a living in a fair way.
Every crisis does, in fact, also present a chance. We will have to build our homes, irrigation systems, and communication networks, and we want to do this in a way that is better, greener, and more resistant to climate change.
“I think this is the time for Pakistan to start making plans for how to deal with the more and more frequent climate disasters we now face,” he said.
“I have to say that the Pakistan Peoples Party is the most important voice in Pakistan when it comes to climate and the environment. They are also pushing this agenda.”
We are focusing on wind and solar energy, but now our main goal will be to adapt to climate change,” Bilawal said.
