Web Desk (LTN NEWS): Islamabad High Court (IHC) asked the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on Tuesday to show “documentary evidence” that PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz was involved in buying the Avenfield properties in London.
Justice Aamer Farooq and Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani, who make up a two-judge IHC bench, resumed hearing Maryam Nawaz and Captain (ret.) Mohammad Safdar appeals against their conviction in the Avenfield properties case.
During the trial, the court said that NAB will have to “prove through document evidence how Maryam Nawaz became complicit by signing a trust deed in 2006 related to a property bought in 1993.”
The two-person bench also told the anti-corruption watchdog to show how Nawaz Sharif was connected to his London properties and offshore companies.
Justice Farooq asked the NAB prosecutor to give a short summary of the charges against the accused to the court.
At this point, the NAB prosecutor said that Maryam was charged with helping Nawaz Sharif build up assets that were worth more than his income.
The judge asked, “You said that Nawaz Sharif bought the properties in 1993. Then how did she help him in 2006?”
The judge said that the case can’t go on based on an assumption and that the facts need to be looked at.
The hearing was put off until September 29 by the court. At the next hearing, the NAB prosecutor will keep making his case.
