Web Desk (LTN NEWS): The Islamabad High Court sent Imran Khan a “show-cause notice” on Tuesday and told him to appear in court on August 31 in his personal capacity. This is because of his controversial comments about additional district and sessions judge Zeba Chaudhry, who approved the remand of his chief of staff, Shahbaz Gill, in a sedition case.
A three-person bench led by Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani, Justice Babar Sattar, and Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb sent out the notice.
The IHC put together the bench on Monday after Acting IHC Chief Justice Aamer Farooq made the decision to start contempt proceedings against the PTI chief. This decision was made during the hearing of a petition challenging the police remand of jailed PTI member Shahbaz Gill in a sedition case.
Imran’s words were asked to be put on the record.
Earlier today, the attorney general of Islamabad, Jahangir Jadoon, asked the court for permission to put Imran’s allegedly negative comments about the judiciary and other institutions on record.
In his application, a copy of which can be found on Dawn.com, Jadoon said that he wanted to put important information on the record, such as videos, clips, and Imran’s previous statements on electronic and digital media.
The Islamabad advocate general said he wanted to ask for permission to “display different statements of the respondents at different times against the judiciary and other institutions.”
In his application, he said, “In these circumstances, it is humbly asked that [the court] allow the above-mentioned material to be shown in this honorable court via USB or other digital devices and that this material be considered as part of the case.”
The application was put in by the state’s lawyer, who is called the advocate general.
Imran’s remarks
Imran has said that Gill has been “sexually abused” and “physically and mentally tortured” while in custody. At a rally in Islamabad on Saturday, Imran blasted the police over this claim and judged Chaudhry for letting Gill stay in jail.
He had said that he would file charges against the inspector general of police in Islamabad and the deputy inspector general of police. Then, he had warned the judges not to be “unfair” to his party, saying that if they did, they should be ready for the consequences.
The head of the PTI told Judge Chaudhry that she, too, would face bad things.
After that, he was arrested and charged under Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act (punishment for acts of terrorism).
In this case, the IHC has given him protective bail until Thursday.
