PM Shehbaz meets with UNSG, discuss climate change

Web Desk (LTN NEWS): PM Shehbaz Sharif met with United Nations Secretary-General (UNSG) António Guterres, emphasizing Pakistan’s extreme vulnerability to climate change despite its small contribution to global carbon emissions.

The meeting took place on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly’s 77th session.

PM welcomed the Secretary-timely General’s visit, which affirmed Pakistan’s strong solidarity in the aftermath of the devastating floods caused by climate change.

He thanked the Secretary-General for his strong push to mobilize international support and assistance for the affected people, and he emphasized the importance of concrete international action to mitigate the effects of climate change on developing countries.

PM praised the Secretary-General for taking the lead in calling for immediate climate action.

The Secretary-General pledged to do everything in his power to rally support for Pakistan. He stated that Pakistan deserved the international community’s full and unwavering support.

PM went on to say that, as the current Chair of the Group of 77 and China, Pakistan would work to develop a common position on how to ensure the accelerated implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals and environmental agreements and commitments.

He thanked the Secretary-General and Deputy Secretary-General for their assistance in this matter. In a regional context, PM Shehbaz emphasized the dire human rights situation in Indian-occupied Kashmir and expressed hope that the Secretary-General will use his good offices to facilitate a just and peaceful resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute in accordance with relevant Security Council resolutions.

PM reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to a peaceful, stable, and prosperous Afghanistan and emphasized the importance of the international community working together to achieve common goals.
