Malala to work with three Apple projects

Web Desk (LTN NEWS): Variety said that Pakistan’s youngest Nobel Prize winner, Malala Yousafzai, has signed a deal for three movies. Last year, she worked with Apple Inc to make several dramas.

Her production company, Extracurricular, is working with the independent studio A24 on a feature-length documentary about the legendary “haenyeo” society of fisherwomen who live on South Korea’s Jeju Island. The documentary has not yet been given a name.

The Speed Cubers director Sue Kim is nominated for a Peabody Award for directing the Apple Original Films title. This is the first project to be made from Extracurricular’s partnership with Apple TV+, which was signed in March 2021.

The publication said that the first project on the upcoming list is a big-screen version of Elaine Hsieh Chou’s acclaimed book Disorientation, a satire about a college student’s revealing dissertation on a young poet that came out earlier this year.

The outlet also said that the project will be made by Adam McKay’s Hyperobject Industries, which made “Don’t Look Up.” Stephanie Mercado and Todd Schulman will be in charge. No one has been chosen to lead.

Malala’s production company also announced a scripted series based on Asha Lemmie’s coming-of-age novel Fifty Words for Rain, which is about a woman trying to find acceptance in Japan after World War II. Overall, the deal with Apple will include dramas, comedies, documentaries, animated shows, and shows for kids.

Malala told the publication, “What I hope to bring to the table are the voices of women of color, first-time writers, and Muslim directors and writers.” “I hope that we can see things from many different points of view and challenge some of the stereotypes we have in our societies. I also hope that the content is entertaining and that people fall in love with the characters and have the best time with them.
